It was about 2007 and Chris “Topher James” Shaw was faced with a difficult decision. Choose a stable corporate job, move up the ladder and risk losing all of his passion for art or choose a much more difficult path of being a professional musician. Easy to look back and say it was the right decision, but the path of taking music on full time is not for the weak of heart. Topher James made a bold decision that day to turn away from the trappings of money and stability to explore what it would be like to play music full time. The goal for James was to make music not just a means of making a living, but to fully integrate it into his way of life. Throughout his upbringing, Topher found a common thread in the music he loved - a captivating melody, powerful emotional depth, and soulful essence. Drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway, as well as contemporary R&B and Gospel talents such as PJ Morton and Emily King, Topher swiftly assembled a band.

Alexandra Avoli, a Bexley High School graduate, is a freshman in college at LSU, where she is a student in the Ogden Honors college. She was drawn to LSU for the many opportunities in music, to include taking a songwriting course taught by a Grammy award winning artist, collaborating with other student musicians, and recording many of her new original songs she has written during her short time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Alexandra began writing her own music and performing locally at a very young age. Her talent was discovered at the age of eight at the Cassingham Elementary talent show where she sang a Bruno Mars song “a cappella” in front of her entire school. When she was nine, she won the “National Singing Star” competition for her age group. One of the best opportunities to come out of winning this competition was winning the chance to record professionally with local producer Felix Weber, whose claim to fame is having worked with Chaka Khan back in the 1980’s. Felix is a talented musician and producer, and is also a concert pianist. He has accompanied Alexandra on several of her recent originals that she has recorded in his studio in Marysville, Ohio.

After performing at 2017’s Bunbury music festival, which also featured death cab for cutie and the shins, they won cd92.9fm’s local artist contest, were featured by American songwriter magazine, and opened for spoon, alvvays, and the aces. But as was true for many musicians, the covid-19 pandemic slowed the band’s momentum, and they chose to focus on writing and recording new music.
